Things to bear in mind when travelling with a wheelchair
Where can you travel with a wheelchair?
The best news first: almost all railway companies offer wheelchair spaces on long-distance trains. Unlike with SBB, for example, you can also book wheelchair spaces online with us. In most cases, we have to book the journey in advance.
On which routes are low-floor entrances available?
Unfortunately, the number of low-floor trains on cross-border routes is very limited. This is also due to the different platform heights. Currently, there are trains with low-floor entrances on connections to Italy and Germany, for example on the Zurich–Milano–Venezia/Livorno/Florence and Basel–Hamburg routes. Most other daytime trains have wheelchair spaces and lifts. We can also organise boarding assistance.
Are there also wheelchair compartments on night trains?
There is a wheelchair compartment on the following night train connections:
ÖBB Nightjet (Zürich–Berlin/Vienna/Graz/Hamburg/Amsterdam) and further connections
Caledonian Sleeper (London–Scotland)
VR (Helsinki/Turku-Rovaniemi-Lapland)
Do accompanying persons receive a discount?
With many railway companies, such as DB (Deutsche Bahn), NS (Dutch Railways) or ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways), accompanying persons receive discounts or even travel free of charge. However, you will need proof that an accompanying person is required.
