Reisen Mit Zug Und Fähre

Travelling by train and ferry

Take the train to the harbour, change to the ferry and then cruise comfortably across the sea into the sunset. Discover new horizons and combine your train journey some hours on the water.

Reasons for combining train and ferry

Great destinations and a high level of comfort: From Switzerland, you can travel daily by train to ferry ports on the Mediterranean, the Baltic and the North Sea without changing trains. The ferries offer a high level of comfort with cosy cabins and fine restaurants. Countless ferries travel Europe’s waters every day, connecting the mainland with the most beautiful Mediterranean islands, the coastal towns of Scandinavia and even destinations in North Africa.

Environmentally friendly: Although it’s widely believed that ferries are a dirty means of transport, this is not entirely true. Although they often run on heavy fuel oil, they also carry a lot of passengers, freight and vehicles. Calculated down to one person, travelling by ferry still emits less CO2 than travelling by car and is significantly more climate-friendly than flying.

Pure experience: Travelling by ferry means starting your holiday earlier. Instead of sitting in a cramped airplane seat, you travel in the comfort of your own cabin. You can watch the sun set over the open sea, enjoy a delicious dinner in a restaurant or on the sun deck and feel the anticipation of your holiday when you spot the coastline on the horizon.

Partnerships: SimpleTrain is an official sales partner of the Cruise & Ferry Centre. This means you not only benefit from the best fares, but also from the know-how of the ferry travel experts.

Information about travelling by ferry

Most ferries on European waters are night ferries. This has the advantage that if you depart from Switzerland in the morning, you can board the ferry the same evening and spend the journey asleep.

This means you can reach great destinations such as Sardinia, Corsica, Gothenburg, Ireland or Albania by train and boat in around one day of travelling.

All ferries have cabins with their own bed and bathroom. A more luxurious option are suites, some of which also have a balcony, whirlpool or sauna.

And if you want to travel a little more budget-friendly and save on comfort (but don’t want to miss out on the adventure), simply look for a seat or a place to sleep on the open deck.
